Home Shelters and Homeless Services The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree is a wood shop where beautiful, handcrafted toys are created in an environment that fosters a renewed sense of purpose and meaning for seniors, formerly and currently homeless individuals, and youth and adults within the greater community. This accepting atmosphere cultivates respect and dignity by empowering people to use their individual talents in an altruistic way. Volunteers at The Giving Tree recognize and expand their talents by creating unique crafts that are either sold to the public or donated to children in need.
The Giving Tree wood shop was opened in 1989 to help restore meaning and dignity into the lives of the residents of The Westlake, a service-enriched housing facility for formerly homeless men age 55 and over. Since then we have opened our doors to the greater community.
Currently, workers include members of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), residents of The Westlake, individuals fulfilling voluntary community service and food stamp requirements, and those who wish to foster their own talents or learn new skills. The Giving Tree collaborates with Mainstay, an employment training program for adults with disabilities. This school year, Ingraham High School's employment training program sends two youths daily to the shop. These students with developmental disabilities are learning valuable employment and life skills.
A portion of toys are donated each year to charities serving children in need in the greater Puget Sound area. See Donations for info on these organizations.
Each toy is individually crafted, painted and assembled with particular attention paid to: Safety, Quality and Visual Appeal.
There is a charm and timelessness about wooden toys that makes them the perfect gift for children of all ages. See our Catalog to order online... or visit our workshop and store in South Lake Union.
